What Makes a Hero?

Filed under: Daily Musings, Writing — elizparker @ 4:11 pm

This weekend I got to see two of my favorite movies showcasing two of my favorite heroes:

frank.jpgFrank Sinatra in Come Blow Your Horn

and Alan Ladd in Shane.shane.jpg

At first glance, the movies are totally different and the two heroes don’t seem much alike. But they are! They resemble each other in many ways, have a lot in common, and evoke the same feelings in me.

What makes these two guys similar–my vision of the iconic hero?

Well, first of all, they are both very good at what they do. Sinatra’s character is a bachelor playboy who revels in his fun-filled lifestyle, always gets the girl, and is just too “cool.” Shane is a gunslinger who is fastest on the draw–never been beat. People who are fully whatever they happen to be (whatever that is), and are the best at what they do, inspire my admiration.

Though not classically handsome, both are sexy and all-male, of course. Both have slight builds and great eyes.

They both have a delightful sense of humor that sometimes makes you giggle.

They’re both self-aware. They’re nobody’s fools, and they take no nonsense or guff from strangers. This makes them fiercely independent, and protective of their friends and the ladies in their lives.

What makes them particularly heart-warming is their combination of toughness with sensitivity. Under their strong exteriors, they’re both capable of tenderness.

In the end, they both take the high road, making morally correct choices on the side of love–even though it means sacrificing something dear to them.

Got to keep these two men in mind next time I’m writing a hero. A girl could do worse!

Working Girl

Filed under: Daily Musings — elizparker @ 2:55 am

girl.jpg  Sorry I haven’t been posting regularly, but now I’ll get back into it. I’ve been on the new job for a week now, and it’s starting to feel comfortable. Like I can do this! During the first few days, I had a few twinges of doubt. Not really–but I sat beside the other women who typed fast and frantic, and then said “You’ll be doing this. Just watch what I do.” Oh, really? But it’s all starting to make sense now.

I got to sit in the fiscal year-end meeting with a report on the company. I am so impressed by online, print-on-demand self-publishing! The company is growing, and as they said, “We’re making dreams come true” for authors. That makes me feel good.

The days have just flown by. It’s never boring, not even for a minute.

And I’m not too tired! I’ve been getting into bed at 10:00 every night. Not that I go to sleep then, but I read and relax. COLD MOUNTAIN lately. Its lovely, melodic language is so soothing, so beautiful, it just takes me away.

Being a working girl is working out fine.

A New Job

Filed under: Daily Musings, Writing — elizparker @ 8:36 pm

happy.jpg   Hooray!  I have now joined the ranks of the full-time employed. I’ve been freelancing for the last three years, doing online Editorial Evaluations and copywriting for a self-publishing firm based here in town. They had an opening for an Editorial Services Associate, and I’m so glad they considered me!

Very happy about this, and I start Wednesday.

I’ll let you know how it is to get up early for a change!

RWA Conference News

Filed under: Writing — elizparker @ 7:04 pm

no-sex.jpg  The Board of Romance Writers of America met this morning and just released their new decisions. The women on Romance Divas are now discussing them. Here’s the gist of it:

For PAN (Published Author Network), RWA is shutting out any publisher that uses their own website as the primary means of sale, any publisher that hasn’t had national distribution for a minimum of 3 years, and any publisher that doesn’t pay $1,000 advances.

There will be no erotic romance category for the Golden Heart or the Rita Awards.

This is, in effect, excluding all erotic romance e-publishers and most erotic romance authors from PAN and the awards. A huge statement that will affect many authors. (Current members of PAN, like me, are grandfathered and can remain members.)

Boy, are people mad! It’s a real slap in the face to many, many romance authors. The fall-out is going to be huge.

My own reaction? I’m shocked and disgusted that RWA passed this. The group is supposed to help its dues-paying members, not exclude and insult them. Why doesn’t RWA focus on things that will help? For instance, where is our group health insurance?

RWA is always moaning about how romance authors “get no respect” from the world at large. They don’t seem to realize that infighting, spatting, and wrong focusing like this could be one reason why.

RWA Conference Blog

rwa_banner_logo.gif  Here’s another opportunity for those of us not attending this year’s RWA Conference in Dallas. They’ve revamped the RWA web site, and there will be a conference blog. We’ll be able to read what’s going on from authors right on the scene.

Here’s the blog’s address:

It should be a fun read.

June Progress

Filed under: Progress — elizparker @ 1:59 am

betty.jpg  I wasn’t going to post my progress this month since it was so small. But then I thought, “What the hay! Progress is progress, right?” So here it is:

No new writing submissions in June. But I am rewriting a book that I will resubmit in July.

At Weight Watchers, I lost another 1.8 pounds, for a total loss of 10.4 pounds. I feel pretty good about that. And at the WW meeting, I received a gold star for a 10-pound weight loss! (We get a new star for every five pounds lost.) It was so gratifying when all the women (and one man) cheered, clapped, and congratulated me. I had to stand and tell how I did it — “Just followed the rules!”

It’s amazing how good a little praise and support can feel. And now the WW bookmark on my refrigerator is sporting one more gorgeous gold star!
